Please join us starting at 9:30 for a half hour of socializing, networking,
coffee/tea, and snacks. President Tracy Lantz will open the program at 10:00 am. The
beginning of the program will include a lively discussion of the high points of the
Gaithersburg Branch from 1972 to 2022 – five decades! Where were you in 1972?

Our distinguished speaker is Karla Silvestre, Director of Community Engagement at
Montgomery College, Vice President of the County Board of Education, the Latino liaison for
the County Executive in Montgomery County’s Office of Community Partnerships, as well as
manager of the county’s Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center. Ms. Silvestre will discuss
ways to engage younger voters as well as provide information on the success of
allowing 16-year-olds to vote in local elections. This is an international effort to
engage younger voters and set them up as consistent participants in civic life.
We will break into groups to discuss how we, as members of AAUW, can contribute to the
efforts to get younger people to vote. We’ll regather before lunch to compare ideas.

The Fall AAUW Maryland Board will convene after lunch.
