Bev Fallik and the Howard County AAUW Branch have developed and gotten behind a piece of legislation that helps custodial parents and their college age children gain support from non custodial parents for college tuition. It is:

AAUW Maryland supports this bill, which recognizes the implications of the high annual cost of attending college- as high at $50K for room, board and tuition. This can result in the largest debt anyone will incur, aside from a home mortgage. Yet, for the children in Maryland, child support currently ends at age eighteen, just when these high costs begin. In cases where there is a single, custodial parent, usually the mother (80% of the time), a woman faces difficult choices. Should she incur huge personal debt to send a child to college? Should she refinance her home or get a second job? All of these options can delay or abandon the idea of retirement, and result in increasing elder poverty. If she does not take on this task, will her child be burdened with huge college loans or, even worse, forsake higher education? None of these choices have positive outcome for women, families, or the State of Maryland. Extending the age of child support to age 22 is a simple, cost-effective way to support women and families in Maryland, enhance quality of life and help promote higher education for all.
